Hello, it’s your host of Healing Naturally, Doctor Trish Wolff of Natural Ways Chiropractic. I am excited, energized, and optimistic that we can improve our health moment by moment with choices that support our wellbeing on a daily basis.

Today, I want to talk to you about something so simple, yet so powerful for your spinal health — water. Yes, plain old water. Now, I know you’ve heard a million times that you should drink more water. But here’s what I want you to understand… your spine actually depends on proper hydration to function the way it should. And when I explain why, I think you’re going to look at that water bottle a little differently.

So let’s talk about what’s happening inside your spine. Between each vertebra, you’ve got these cushions called discs. Think of them like little jelly donuts — they have a tougher outer layer and a gel-like center. That gel center is made up of about seventy to eighty percent water. When you’re well hydrated, those discs are plump and healthy. They can absorb shock, they let you bend and move, and they keep space between your vertebrae so nerves don’t get pinched.

But here’s the thing… throughout the day, just from gravity and normal movement, your discs lose water. It’s completely natural. This is why you’re actually a bit taller in the morning than at night. While you sleep, those discs rehydrate. They soak up fluid like a sponge. But if you’re not drinking enough water during the day, your body doesn’t have the resources to fully rehydrate those discs overnight. Over time, dehydrated discs become thinner, weaker, and less able to do their job. That can lead to stiffness, pain, and even nerve irritation.

Now, hydration doesn’t just affect your discs. Your muscles and connective tissues need water too. When you’re dehydrated, muscles get tight and crampy. They don’t recover as well from stress or injury. And tight muscles? They pull on your spine in ways that create tension and misalignment. I see this all the time in my practice. Someone comes in with neck pain or low back pain, and when we talk about their habits, they’re barely drinking any water. It’s one of those foundational things that makes everything else work better.

So what should you actually do? Here’s my simple recommendation. Aim for about half your body weight in ounces of water each day. So if you weigh one hundred sixty pounds, that’s about eighty ounces of water. Now, if you’re exercising or it’s a hot day, you’ll need more. And here’s a tip — don’t wait until you’re thirsty. By the time you feel thirsty, you’re already a bit dehydrated. Sip water throughout the day.

I also tell my patients to pay attention to the quality of their water. If your tap water doesn’t taste great or you’re concerned about what’s in it, get a good filter. You’re more likely to drink water if it tastes good. And if plain water feels boring, try adding a slice of lemon or some fresh mint. Just skip the sugary drinks and sodas — those actually work against you.

Here’s something else to think about. If you’re coming in for chiropractic adjustments but you’re chronically dehydrated, your body won’t hold those adjustments as well. Hydration helps your tissues stay flexible and responsive. It supports healing. It’s one of those simple things that amplifies all the other good work you’re doing for your health.

Now, if you’re dealing with ongoing back pain, neck pain, or stiffness, don’t just assume it’s all about hydration. There could be alignment issues, muscle imbalances, or other things going on that need professional attention. That’s where we come in. At Natural Ways Chiropractic here in Roseville, we look at the whole picture. We’ll assess your spine, talk about your daily habits, and create a plan that actually works for your life.

So here’s your action step. Starting today, make hydration a priority. Keep a water bottle with you. Set reminders on your phone if you need to. Your spine will thank you. Your energy will improve. And you might just notice that some of those aches and pains start to ease up.
