Hello, and welcome back. I’m Doctor Trish Wolff, your host of Healing Naturally, and I practice at Natural Ways Chiropractic right here in Roseville, Minnesota. I am so excited, and genuinely energized, and completely optimistic that we can all improve our health — moment by moment — with small choices that support our wellbeing every single day. And today, that’s exactly what we’re talking about. How you start your morning matters more than you might think.

Here’s what I hear a lot in my office. People roll out of bed feeling stiff, achy, maybe a little creaky — and they just assume that’s normal. That it’s part of getting older, or part of life. And I want to gently push back on that. Some morning stiffness is completely natural. Your body has been still for hours. Your joints need time to warm up. But there’s so much you can do to make that transition from sleep to movement feel a whole lot better.

So let me break this down for you. When you sleep, the fluid around your joints — called synovial fluid — kind of settles. It’s not circulating the way it does when you’re moving around. So when you wake up and your knees feel tight, or your low back feels stiff, that’s largely what’s happening. Your body just needs a little nudge to get things flowing again. And that’s where a simple morning mobility routine comes in.

Now, the key word here is mobility — not stretching, not a full workout. We’re just asking your body to move gently through its natural ranges of motion. Think of it like warming up a car on a cold morning. You wouldn’t just floor the gas pedal the second you start the engine. You let it warm up first. Same idea here.

Here’s what I recommend to a lot of my patients. Before you even get out of bed, spend just a minute or two on some gentle knee-to-chest pulls. Just lying on your back, bring one knee up toward your chest, hold it for a few seconds, then switch sides. This gently opens up the low back and takes some pressure off the lumbar spine. It feels really good, and it costs you nothing.

Then, once you’re sitting up on the edge of the bed, try some slow neck rolls. Not fast, not forced — just gentle. Let your ear drop toward your shoulder, hold for a breath, then move to the other side. Then slowly look left, then right. This wakes up the cervical spine and helps reduce that tension that tends to build up overnight.

After that, stand up and do some gentle hip circles. Just feet shoulder-width apart, hands on your hips, and slowly make big circles with your hips — five in one direction, five in the other. Your hips carry so much of your body’s load throughout the day. Giving them a little love in the morning goes a long way.

And here’s the practical piece — this whole routine takes about five minutes. That’s it. You don’t need equipment. You don’t need a gym. You just need a little intention before you reach for your phone or your coffee.

Now, here’s when I’d encourage you to come in and see us. If your morning stiffness lasts more than thirty or forty minutes, that’s worth paying attention to. If you’re waking up with pain that isn’t going away on its own, or if certain movements feel sharp or limited — those are signs that something in your spine or your joints may need a closer look. A chiropractic evaluation can help identify what’s going on and get you moving better, faster.
