Hello, and welcome back. I’m your host of Healing Naturally — Doctor Trish Wolff of Natural Ways Chiropractic, right here in Roseville. I am genuinely excited, energized, and optimistic that we can improve our health — moment by moment — with choices that support our well-being each and every day. And today’s topic is one that touches just about every single person listening right now. We’re talking about posture. Specifically, why posture matters more than ever in this screen-focused world we’re all living in.

Now, here’s the thing. When most people hear the word posture, they think of their mom telling them to sit up straight at the dinner table. And while that advice wasn’t wrong — it actually goes so much deeper than that. Your posture affects how you feel, how you breathe, how much energy you have, and even how your nervous system functions. So let’s dig into this a little bit.

You know what I hear a lot in my office? People come in and say, I don’t know what I did — my neck just started hurting. Or, my upper back has been aching for months and I can’t figure out why. And when I ask them about their daily routine, almost every time, we’re talking about hours and hours in front of a screen. A computer at work, a phone in the car, a tablet on the couch. Sound familiar?

Here’s what’s interesting. The human head weighs somewhere around ten to twelve pounds when it’s balanced directly over the shoulders. That’s already a significant weight for your spine to support all day long. But when you tilt your head forward — even just a couple of inches — the effective load on your cervical spine can multiply dramatically. We’re talking about the kind of stress that adds up over months and years. And your muscles, your discs, your joints — they feel every bit of it.

Let me break this down for you. When your head drifts forward and your shoulders round in — which is exactly what happens when we’re hunched over a phone or a laptop — your body starts to adapt to that position. The muscles in the front of your chest get tight. The muscles in the back of your neck and upper back get overworked and fatigued. And over time, your spine can actually start to lose the natural curves it’s supposed to have. Those curves exist for a reason. They act like a spring, absorbing shock and distributing load evenly. When we lose them, problems follow.

Now, here’s the practical part — what can you actually do about this starting today. First, take breaks. Every thirty minutes or so, stand up, roll your shoulders back, and look at something across the room. Give your eyes and your spine a reset. Second, think about your screen height. Your monitor or laptop should be at eye level so you’re not constantly looking down. A simple riser or a stack of books can make a real difference. Third, try a simple chin tuck exercise. Sitting tall, gently pull your chin straight back — like you’re making a slight double chin — hold it for a few seconds, and release. This helps retrain the deep muscles that support your head and neck. Do that a few times throughout the day and you’ll be amazed at how much better you feel.

Now, when should you come see me? If you’ve been dealing with neck pain, headaches, upper back tension, or even that nagging feeling of tightness between your shoulder blades — those are signs your spine may need some attention. Posture problems don’t usually fix themselves once they’ve set in. The good news is, with the right care and some simple daily habits, most people respond really well.

At Natural Ways Chiropractic, we look at the whole picture. We assess your posture, your spinal alignment, and how everything is working together — and then we build a plan that actually fits your life.
