Hello, it’s your host of Healing Naturally, Doctor Trish Wolff of Natural Ways Chiropractic. I am excited, energized, and optimistic that we can improve our health moment by moment with choices that support our well being on a daily basis.

Today we’re diving into something I see affecting nearly every patient who walks through my door… posture. And I’m not just talking about sitting up straight because your mom told you to. I’m talking about how your posture is affecting your energy, your pain levels, and even your mood right now.

Here’s the thing. Most of us spend hours every day looking down at our phones or hunched over a computer. And our bodies? They’re screaming at us. That tight neck, those achy shoulders, the headaches that won’t quit… a lot of times, it’s coming from postural stress.

So why does posture matter so much? Well, think about it this way. Your spine is designed to stack up in a very specific way. When everything is aligned properly, your muscles can relax. Your nerves can function without interference. But when your head shifts forward… and it doesn’t take much… maybe just two or three inches… it can add twenty to thirty pounds of extra strain on your neck and upper back. That’s like carrying a bowling ball around all day.

And over time? That forward head posture starts to pull on everything. Your shoulders round. Your mid back curves too much. Your hips tilt. The whole system gets out of balance. And suddenly you’re dealing with chronic tension, fatigue, even digestive issues because your ribcage isn’t sitting where it should be.

Now, I hear this all the time. People say, Doctor Wolff, I know my posture is bad, but I just can’t seem to fix it. And I get it. Because here’s what’s interesting. Poor posture isn’t just about being lazy or not paying attention. A lot of times, the muscles that should be holding you upright have gotten weak or overstretched. And the muscles in the front of your body? They’ve gotten tight and short from all that hunching. So your body is literally stuck in that position.

The good news? You can retrain it. Let me give you three simple things you can start doing today.

First… check in with your screen height. Whether it’s your computer or your phone, bring it up to eye level. Your ears should be over your shoulders, not jutting forward. If you’re working at a desk, raise your monitor. If you’re on your phone, hold it higher. I know it feels weird at first, but trust me, your neck will thank you.

Second… strengthen your upper back. Those muscles between your shoulder blades need to wake up. Try this. Squeeze your shoulder blades together like you’re holding a pencil between them. Hold for five seconds. Release. Do that ten times a few times a day. It sounds simple, but it makes a real difference.

Third… stretch your chest. Put your hand on a doorway and gently turn your body away until you feel a stretch across your chest and the front of your shoulder. Hold it for thirty seconds on each side. Do this morning and night. You’re opening up all that tightness that’s pulling you forward.

Now… here’s when you should come see me or another chiropractor. If you’ve been dealing with neck pain, upper back pain, or headaches for more than a week or two, it’s time to get checked. Because sometimes there are misalignments in the spine that need a specific adjustment to get things moving properly again. And we can also evaluate your posture and give you a personalized plan.

Posture isn’t just about looking confident… although that’s a nice bonus. It’s about letting your body work the way it was designed to. Less pain. More energy. Better function. And that’s what we’re all about here at Natural Ways Chiropractic in Roseville.
