Episode Notes:

In this episode of Healing Naturally, Dr. Patricia Wolff tackles one of the most commonly asked questions she hears in her practice: what is that popping or cracking sound during a chiropractic adjustment, and is it actually good for you?

Dr. Wolff explores the science behind joint cavitation, separating fact from fiction when it comes to cracking your knuckles, getting adjusted, and what these sounds really mean for your health.

Whether you’re a longtime chiropractic patient or simply curious about what happens inside your joints, this episode offers a clear and informative look at a topic that surprises many listeners. Tune in to learn how small daily choices — including understanding your own body — can support lasting, natural wellness.

Hello, and welcome back. I’m Doctor Trish Wolff, your host of Healing Naturally, and I am so glad you’re here today. I’m excited, I’m energized, and I truly believe that we can improve our health — moment by moment — with the choices we make every single day. That’s what this podcast is all about. And today, we’re diving into a topic I get asked about all the time. What is that sound? That pop, that crack, that snap — when you get adjusted, or even when you crack your own knuckles. Is it good for you? Is it bad for you? Is something breaking in there? Let’s clear this up once and for all.

So here’s the thing — that sound has a name. It’s called a cavitation. And I know that sounds very scientific, but stay with me, because it’s actually pretty fascinating. Your joints are surrounded by a fluid called synovial fluid. This fluid keeps your joints lubricated and nourished. Now, when a joint is moved quickly through its range of motion — like during a chiropractic adjustment — there’s a rapid change in pressure inside that joint space. And when that pressure shifts, tiny gas bubbles form and release. That release is what makes the popping sound.

Now here’s what’s interesting. Nothing is cracking. Nothing is breaking. No bone is grinding against another bone. It is simply a pressure change inside the joint. Think of it like opening a can of soda. That fizzing sound — that’s gas releasing from a change in pressure. Same basic idea.

Now, I hear this a lot — people come in and they say, Doctor Wolff, I crack my knuckles every day. Is that going to give me arthritis? And I want you to hear this clearly. The research does not support that. Habitual knuckle cracking has not been shown to cause arthritis. Now, that doesn’t mean I’m encouraging you to crack your knuckles all day long — but you can stop worrying that you’re doing permanent damage every time it happens.

Here’s where it gets important though. There is a real difference between a joint that pops on its own, and a chiropractic adjustment. When you twist your back or yank on your fingers to get a crack, you’re often just moving whatever joint is the most mobile — the joints that move the easiest. A chiropractic adjustment is specific, controlled, and intentional. We are targeting joints that are restricted — joints that have lost their normal movement. The goal isn’t just to get a sound. The goal is to restore proper motion to a joint that needs it.

And here’s something people don’t always realize. Not every adjustment even makes a sound. Some techniques are very gentle and produce no pop at all. The therapeutic value comes from restoring movement and reducing stress on the surrounding muscles and nerves — not from the crack itself.

So what can you do starting today? First, stop worrying about the sound. Whether you hear it or you don’t during an adjustment, what matters is what we’re accomplishing in that joint. Second, pay attention to areas in your body that feel stiff, stuck, or that you constantly feel the urge to crack. That urge — that need to keep popping a joint over and over — that’s often your body telling you something is off in the surrounding area. It might be time to get it looked at.
